Partial Hip Replacement

Partial Hip Replacement, also known as Hemiarthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces only the damaged or fractured part of the hip joint, rather than the entire joint. It is commonly performed in elderly patients with a hip fracture (femoral neck fracture) or those who have limited joint damage.

Unlike Total Hip Replacement (THR), which replaces both the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket), Partial Hip Replacement only replaces the femoral head while keeping the natural hip socket intact. This approach results in less tissue damage, quicker recovery, and fewer complications in selected patients.

Who Needs a Partial Hip Replacement ?

Partial Hip Replacement is recommended for patients who :-

✔️ Have suffered a hip fracture, especially a femoral neck fracture.
✔️ Have a functioning and healthy hip socket (acetabulum).
✔️ Are elderly or have low physical activity levels.
✔️ Are not suitable candidates for Total Hip Replacement due to medical conditions.
✔️ Need a faster recovery to regain mobility and independence.

Benefits of Partial Hip Replacement

Less Invasive – Smaller incisions and less disruption to soft tissues.
Faster Recovery – Shorter hospital stay and quicker rehabilitation.
Less Pain & Blood Loss – Compared to Total Hip Replacement.
Lower Risk of Dislocation – As the natural hip socket remains intact.
Cost-Effective – Suitable for elderly patients who do not require long-term durability.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Hospital Stay – Most patients are discharged within 2–4 days.
💪 Physiotherapy – Starts immediately to regain strength and mobility.
🚶 Walking – Assisted walking begins within a day or two post-surgery.
🏋️ Full Recovery – Usually achieved in 6–12 weeks, depending on age and activity level.

Partial Hip Replacement Surgery

Partial Hip Replacement, or Hemiarthroplasty, is a surgical procedure where only the damaged femoral head (ball of the hip joint) is replaced, while the natural hip socket (acetabulum) is preserved.

Partial Hip Replacement only replaces the femoral head, while Total Hip Replacement replaces both the femoral head and the hip socket. Partial replacement is mainly used for hip fractures in elderly patients.

It is recommended for patients who :-

✔️ Have a femoral neck fracture or hip injury.
✔️ Have minimal arthritis in the hip joint.
✔️ Are elderly or have low activity levels.
✔️ Need a faster recovery and fewer complications.

The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours, followed by post-operative monitoring.

Most patients recover within 6 to 12 weeks, but rehabilitation and physiotherapy are essential for better mobility.

Patients are usually encouraged to start walking with assistance within 24 hours after surgery.
